Dr. Vickie Grooms Denny was born in Dayton, Ohio and grew up in the suburb of West Carrollton. She played all sports in high school and even branched out a bit from athletics by playing the trumpet in the band. Vickie received her BS in Health and Physical Education from Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC, her MEd in Physical Education/Psychomotor Development from the University of Illinois, Chicago and attained her PhD in Physical Education/Teacher Education from Florida State University. With 27 years of coaching experience at various levels of competition, Vickie bean her collegiate coaching carrer at Maranatha Baptist Bible College in Wisconsin. She has coached within the NCCAA 22 years, the last 15 at Clearwater Christian College where she currently chairs the Exercise and Sport Science Department and teaches several courses. Coach Denny’s overall volleyball record is impressive with 605 wins 197 losses (513/143 Clearwater). Her teams have won six NCCAA DII Championships and finished runner-up five times. While her teams have done well, Coach Denny’s personal accomplishments are equally noteworthy, having been named NCCAA DII District/Regional Coach of the Year 12 times, National Tournament Coach three times and NCCAA DII National Coach of the Year three times. Vickie served the NCCAA as the National DII Volleyball Chair from 1998-2002. She keeps current in her sport, having completed level III of the USA Volleyball Coaching Accreditation Program. For the past 22 years Coach Denny has directed summer volleyball camps and clinics, and recently she and her husband, Lou, established “Victory Volleyball Camps and Clinics” which are conducted with a Christian aspect. However impressive the above “statistics” may be, of more importance is the impact Vickie has had on her students, peers and others and what they say about her. Dr. Richard Stratton, president of Clearwater states, “She has influenced hundreds of lives during her years of ministry…She has given them a clear picture of the disciplined life, and she has challenged her pupils and team members to follow hard after Christ. Only eternity will tell the extent of Coach Denny’s influence in the classroom and on the court.”
