Born in Olean, New York, on September 16, 1931, John C. Wheeler is the twenty-sixth inductee into the NCCAA Hall of Fame. Ironically, every member of this outstanding group has been greatly impacted by John and his 20 years of service to the NCCAA. A 1954 graduate of Taylor University, after attending Houghton College his freshman year, John’s love for athletics and performing arts was evident as he participated in football and European Music Tours while at Taylor. In 1958, he founded the Teen Olympics through his involvement with Youth for Christ and has served as President of the Taylor University Hall of Fame for over 20 years. Other areas of volunteer service and leadership have been Middletown Christian School, Springboro City Improvement Corporation and various church committees. Since 1983, John and his wife, Jody, have been actively involved with the NCCAA. As a member of the Board of Directors from 1983-1992 and now currently serving until 2004, John has seen this association through the “teenage” years. Today, John is thrilled to see where the Lord has brought the NCCAA and is a catalyst in attempting to insure its future. He and Jody are prayer warriors and givers of their time, talents and treasure, but most of all they are friends to all who enjoy the NCCAA. As the founder of the NCCAA Bobby Clampett/4HIM Pro-Am Classic in 1988, John started what is today one of the top charity events in the country. With Jody helping every step of the way, they poured their hearts into ministering to PGA professionals while promoting the need for an association to serve Christian higher education through athletics. Fellow Board member and golfing companion, Dave Spilman, states, “John embodies the complete profile of the NCCAA – its history, its Christian commitment and its dedication to service student-athletes. He has loved, served and dedicated his time and talents to the organization for nearly all of its history”. As many of the letters of congratulations state, John has not been traveling down this road alone. Jody has more than allowed his service, she has complimented it and added her own measure of support. “John and Jody have been faithful servants to the Lord and the NCCAA. I cannot think of anyone more deserving of induction into the NCCAA Hall of Fame. The NCCAA and its members are eternally indebted to John Wheeler, and fortunate to have such a friend,” writes Dr. Bob Jackson. On this day, the Hall of Fame committee concurs that we are pleased to induct John C. Wheeler into the NCCAA Hall of Fame.
