Dr. Barry R. May is no stranger to the NCCAA having served as its Executive Director from 1989-1997. Under his leadership the NCCAA grew not only in size but in recognition as well. May received his B.A. degree in Business/Economics, with a minor in Physical Education, in 1965 from Spring Arbor College, Spring Arbor, Michigan. From there he went to the University of Maryland and received his M.A. in Education Administration. Then at the University of Illinois in 1978 he received his PhD in Physical Education, with a minor in Administration of Higher Education. His awards are numerous: MVP in both Cross Country and Track and Field; NAIA State Two-Mile Champion, 1965; Who’s Who Among Student in American Universities and Colleges, 1965; Alpha Kappa Sigma Honor Society, 1965; Outstanding Educators of America, 1975; NAIA District 21 Cross Country “Coach of the Year” award in both Cross-Country and Track and Field; Coach of two NAIA All-American and NAIA All District Athletes in Track and Field and Cross-Country; Spring Arbor College Young Leader Award, 1983; and Spring Arbor College Inaugural Member of the Athletic Hall of Fame, 1996. “His insight, integrity, and diligence enabled the organization to gain respect from members and nonmembers alike,” stated Rick Johnson, NCCAA Board Chairman. His character is one of trust and dependability. John Foss, IWU Track and Field and Cross-County Coach, states, “During my four years as a student-athlete on your teams, I experienced tremendous growth spiritually, academically, and athletically. I have always considered you to be a catalyst for that growth. Growing up without a father in the home, I desperately needed a positive role model at that point in my life and you met that need.”
