For Candace Moats, coaching is a venue to minister in the lives of young people. Her competitive drive means she never stops pursuing excellence, but her passion is to pour into the lives of her student-athletes and grow the platform for the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Candace exemplifies Christ in all she does, whether she is coaching, teaching, or mentoring. She has a desire to “finish the race well,” being everything God wants her to be and allowing Him to do everything He wants to do through her.

Candace began her coaching career at Crown College in 1984. She coached volleyball for 11 years and served as Crown’s Athletic Director for 4 years. Candace then moved to Grace College in 1995 to coach and teach before landing at Indiana Wesleyan University in 2002. Throughout her career, Candace has also served in various leadership roles within the NCCAA and NAIA. She was the NCCAA Division I National Volleyball Chair for 10 years and was a member at-large on the NCCAA Board of Directors for 4 years. Candace was also the Mid-Central College Conference (MCC) Volleyball Chair for 3 years, an NAIA Region Volleyball Chair for 7 years, and served on the NAIA Volleyball Committee as President and Vice President for 1 year each.

On the court, Candace has a career volleyball coaching record of 817-338 and has tallied multiple regional championships, 13 Crossroads League/MCC Tournament Championships, 3 NCCAA National Championships, and 8 trips to the NAIA National Tournament. She also earned several regional and conference coach of the year awards, along with 4 NCCAA National Coach of the Year awards.

But as Candace has stated, “Finishing well is not measured by awards or recognition, but by my willingness to listen to God’s voice, focus on what He is up to with me, my teams, and/or individual athletes, and believe in the end that I was used fully to impact people’s lives for Christ.” Candace has put this concept into action through discipling student-athletes who are already believers, helping them grow deeper in their faith and love of Jesus, while also mentoring student-athletes who have not yet made faith decisions, intentionally pouring into these young women whose eternity hangs in the balance. She has also organized multiple opportunities for her teams to pour into others, including mission trips to other countries where volleyball matches were used to share the Gospel.

John Foss, Indiana Wesleyan University Head Cross Country and Assistant Track and Field Coach, stated, “We often have the opportunity to recognize a champion or to recognize someone whose obedience to Christ impacts lives in a miraculous fashion. It seems rare to recognize someone who truly does both as Candace has.”

“I watched Coach Moats walk through adversity, personal loss, and change in a humble, Christ-pursuing, and honest way that in turn allowed others around her to be honest and vulnerable about their own struggles,” said former student-athlete Rebekah Reichard. “I strive to do the same in my own life, and as a collegiate athletic trainer, I see every encounter with one of my own athletes as a chance to make a difference in his or her life.”

“Candace Moats epitomizes what an NCCAA Hall of Fame coach should be,” stated NCCAA Executive Director Dan Wood. “Her heart for using the great sport of volleyball to reach, impact, and grow young people has and will impact eternity in ways we cannot imagine. Add in her impact and role modeling to opposing coaches and peers and she simply checks all the boxes for being a disciple maker. The litany of championships and awards truly becomes pale in comparison.”

The NCCAA is honored to induct Candace Moats into the Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2018.
