Dr. Dennis Scott has fostered a spirit of excellence throughout his career, evidenced through many accomplishments in and out of competition. Dennis always pushes his student-athletes to do their best in everything they pursue, including athletics, academics, and most importantly, spirituality. His main goal is not winning, but to train men and women to use sports to glorify God and serve Him.
Dennis graduated from Maranatha Baptist Bible College (now Maranatha Baptist University) in 1980 and earned a Master of Sports Science degree from the United States Sports Academy in 1989. He then joined the college coaching ranks in 1991 at Northland International University (formerly Northland Baptist Bible College). Dennis served in a variety of roles during his 22-year tenure at Northland, including Director of Sports Ministries, Athletics Director, Men’s Basketball Coach, Men’s Golf Coach, and Women’s Soccer Coach. He also served in the NCCAA as the Division II Men’s Basketball National Sport Chair for three years.
In 2013, Dennis started the men’s and women’s golf programs at Bob Jones University, where he currently serves as the head coach. He has coached two NCCAA All-Americans and two Dan and Kelly Wood Award winners. He led the men’s team to an NCCAA South Regional Championship in 2017, just four years after starting the program. His men’s golf teams have participated in four NCCAA National Championships and the women’s teams have had two individual qualifiers participate.
Well known for his servant leadership, Dennis has used the platform of athletics as a tool for impacting men and women to be who God created them to be. He is able to mold the character of his student-athletes through his life example of commitment to God, his family, and his calling as a coach. Dennis’ teams understand that in eternity it won’t matter how you perform as an athlete, but what does matter is that you modeled Christ through it and impacted others along the way.
Dr. Neal Ring, Bob Jones University Director of Athletics, said, “Coach Scott is an excellent representative of what a Christian coach should be. He has had an indelible impact on my life, helping me to see athletics as a spiritual journey and opportunity to take a physical component of life and use it for God’s glory.”
“I deeply respect Dennis and his ministry to our students and student-athletes,” said Bob Jones University President Steve Pettit. “He exemplifies the best of the best and is one of my most trusted advisors for intercollegiate sports.”
Joshua Beers, Senior Vice President of Student Experience at Lancaster Bible College, stated, “No task is beneath Coach Scott, as I have watched him model servant leadership as a coach and athletic director in doing menial tasks often reserved for others. He was a key influencer in my life who took the game of basketball and used it to teach and prepare me for a life of service to God and others.”
The NCCAA is honored to induct Dr. Dennis Scott into the Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2020.
