Darren Richie is a people-centered servant leader who genuinely cares for others in the way he leads. In his 12 years as Director of Athletics at NCCAA institutions, his conviction to push for spiritual growth, better moral conduct, and more buy-in to the school’s mission has been evident. While athletic departments under his leadership have seen much success, his commitment to using athletics as a tool to share Christ has had immeasurable Kingdom impact.
During his nine years at Colorado Christian University (CCU) and three years at Columbia International University (CIU), his programs have appeared in over 30 NCCAA National Championships while winning 6 National Titles. That success has also extended outside of the NCCAA with 13 Conference Championship Titles, 12 NCAA Division II Championship appearances, 9 NAIA Championship appearances, and 2 NAIA National Titles.
Through all the athletic success, Darren has helped maintain a firm commitment to Christ. CCU received the NCCAA Sports Ministries Award, which recognized member institutions having significant spiritual outreach through the utilization of athletic ministries. While at CIU, he has started a Bible study for coaches, an Athletics Retreat, requires team chaplains for every team, and supported the addition of Fellowship of Christian Athletes on campus. Darren ensures that his coaches are being challenged and supported in their faith, so they are better prepared to mentor and lead student-athletes.
Mission trips are another point of emphasis for Darren, as he provides opportunities and experiences for student-athletes to be the hands and feet of Jesus. Through his relationships with missionaries in Costa Rica, countless teams have had the chance to learn, grow, and serve on these trips. Darren organizes the trip itinerary, leads daily devotionals, and serves the team graciously while traveling.
CIU Associate Director of Athletics Kim Abbott said, “I have been amazed at Darren’s passion, wisdom, and heart for what he does. He shows such patience in adversity, calmness in chaos, and wisdom in crisis. He loves Jesus, loves the Word, and loves to challenge those around him to serve and love Jesus more.”
“Darren has demonstrated his years of experience, knowledge, and Christian character during some very challenging times,” stated CIU Acting President Dr. Rick Christman. “Under his leadership, we have not only won athletic championships, but have also won student-athletes to Christ. Darren has exhibited a life of excellence that aligns with the NCCAA’s mission of keeping Christ at the center of intercollegiate athletics.”
Former student of Darren’s and CCU Women’s Soccer Coach Tammy McPherson said, “Coach Richie quickly became the favorite coach, mentor, teacher, friend, and boss of so many throughout my high school career and beyond. He is a man of great character with an unwavering passion to share the love of Christ. Coach Richie’s integrity, love, and service to others have consistently transcended the expectations of so many, which is why he has left a lifelong mark of love and truth on so many lives.”
The NCCAA is honored to induct Darren Richie into the Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2023.
