Alice Lloyd Earns the Only Upset in Day One of the NCCAA Division II Women’s Volleyball Championship

Joplin, MO – After the top seeds held strong through the first five matches, (6) Alice Lloyd College would upset (2) Arlington Baptist University in a five-set thriller that ended 22-20 in the fifth. Pool play will conclude tomorrow with six more matches and semifinal berths on the line. Action set to begin at 9:30 a.m. CT back at Ozark Christian College in Joplin, Missouri. 
 
Pool A: #4 Bob Jones University 3, #5 Faith Baptist Bible College 1
  • Both sides set the tone at the service line, with four aces in the first 10 points of the first match of the day. Lois Bido of Bob Jones recorded back-to-back aces to help the bruins get out to a 6-4 edge. 
  • After Bob Jones led by four late in the set, Faith Baptist Bible would go on a 7-0 run to get to set point. Belle Wirges and Codie Wirges recorded big blocks in the run to help the Eagles steal set one, 25-22. 
  • The Bruins dominated set two for a big response to even the match. The bruins recorded a 6-1 run in the middle of the set behind the block and attack of Hannah Goodwin to hold a 22-13 advantage. 
  • Faith Baptist would use the serve to cut the deficit to as low as four, but a service ace from Bethany Estell gave the Bruins a 25-19 set two victory. 
  • Neither side could garnish a lead larger than two through the majority of the third set. A kill and block from Hannah Goodwin in addition to a service ace form Hayley Prater gave Bob Jones the first three-point edge at 21-18. 
  • Madison Goldstrom earned the final kill for the Bruins to take set three, 25-21. Bob Jones totaled five blocks in the third set. 
  • Set four was all Bruins, scoring the first five points of the match. They would hold the lead from start to finish to take the set 25-17 and win the match 3-1. 
Pool B: #3 Pensacola Christian College 3, #6 Alice Lloyd College 0
  • The Dr. Vickie Grooms Denny Award winner Sydney Anderson got Pensacola Christian off to a hot start. Anderson recorded a pair of kills, a block, and an ace in the first 10 points to give Pensacola a 6-4 edge. 
  • Alice Lloyd responded to the strong Pensacola start with a block from Kyleah Ward that gave them a 17-16 lead. 
  • Lyssie Metzker led Pensacola Christian to a response in set one with five kills on 14 attempts to help the Eagles secure the 25-21 victory. 
  • Pensacola Christian did not look back in set two, continuing to dominate the offensive end. The Eagles forced Alice Lloyd into an early timeout after an Olivia Boyd kill brought their lead to 9-4. 
  • Syndey Anderson again began to take over late in set two, recording her 10th kill of the match with a push shot to the back corner. Alice Lloyd used a 6-0 run to try and comeback, but Pensacola was able to hold on with another Anderson kill and an ace from Madisyn Kandel to take set two 26-24.
  • Hope Brooks dominated the service line in set three to help Pensacola Christian take a 17-8 lead on Alice Lloyd. After a timeout, Pensacola would secure the 25-19 victory to sweep the match. Pensacola recorded eight service aces in the match. 
Pool A: #1 Manhattan Christian College 3, #8 Ozark Christian College 0
  • Top-seeded Manhattan Christian showed their strength early, taking a 9-1 set one advantage. Liv Lubbers recorded a pair of service aces and Jacey Schurle added a pair of big kills in the run. 
  • Manhattan Christian would end the first set with six service aces, led by four from Sienna Alexander, and a .478 hitting percentage to take set one 25-8 over the host Ozark Christian. 
  • Ozark Christian fared much better in set two, tying things at 10 after a Manhattan Christian attack error. The Thunder would respond with eight straight points, highlighted by a trio of aces from Jaiden Brewer to take an 18-10 set two lead. 
  • Manhattan Christian would add five more aces in set two to win 25-14 and take command. 
  • The Thunder would end the match with 15 service aces as they took set three 25-14 to earn a sweep in their first match of the 2025 Division II Women’s Volleyball National Championship. 

Pool B: #2 Arlington Baptist University 3, #7 Emmaus University 1
  • Arlington Baptist and Emmaus traded five point runs to open the match. Arlington scored the first five highlighted by a kill from Tara Tackett, and Emmaus scoring the second five highlighted by a pair of blocks from Brooke Hodges and Lindsey Mcllveen.
  • The defense was on display for both sides in set one. Arlington Baptist saw Julianna Martinez get a dig to kill save to help the Patriots regain the early advantage. 
  • After a back-and-forth that forced extra points to be played in the first set, Emmaus was able to steal the lead from Arlington Baptist to take set one 26-24. Lindsey McIlveen recorded a huge kill to get the Eagles out of set point and spark the late 4-0 run. 
  • A kill from Alexa Tucker put Arlington Baptist up 9-6 in set two to help get them back on track. Emmaus would use their first timeout after a 4-1 Patriot run.
  • Emmaus would continue to fight in set two, once again recovering from a deficit to take a 20-19 lead. Arlington’s Kensington Jordon would score the next four points for the Patriots to put them back in front and help them secure a 25-23 set two victory. 
  • In set three, both sides saw a lead of four or more points. Neither side could hold the lead however, as Michelle Striley of Emmaus recorded a service ace to tie set three at 14 and force Arlington Baptist into a timeout. 
  • Kensington Jordon and Tara Tackett recorded crucial kills down the stretch of set three to once again help Arlington Baptist win 25-23. Through three sets, Jordon and Tackett totaled 29 kills to lead the Patriots comeback. 
  • The Emmaus comeback efforts would run out of steam in the fourth. Arlington Baptist would double-up the Eagles at 12-6 and not look back to take set four 25-16 to earn the 3-1 victory in their first match of pool play. 
Pool A: #1 Manhattan Christian College 3, #5 Faith Baptist Bible College 0
  • In their second match of the day, top-seeded Manhattan Christian saw a similar start to their first game, using the service line to get out to an early lead. The Thunder saw two service aces, including one from Ellie Wilson that forced a Faith Baptist Bible timeout at 8-3. 
  • After the timeout, Faith Baptist Bible would storm all the way back to take a 12-11 lead on a Codie Wirges service ace. 
  • Manhattan Christian would respond with six straight points to take control of set one and later secure set point on an Ellie Wilson kill, 25-21. 
  • The Eagles would get off to a much stronger start in set two, scoring the first four points highlighted by a kill from Belle Wirges. 
  • Manhattan would respond with a 7-1 run to take an 18-14 lead. Jacey Schurle capped the run with a huge kill. The Thunder would carry their lead the remainder of the set to take set two, 25-17. 
  • The Thunder would again have a late set run to win the third 25-18 and earn a sweep. The dynamic offense was led by Ellie Wilson’s 15 kills and .286 hitting percentage, while Sienna Alexander recorded four of Manhattan Christian’s 11 service aces in the match to lead the team. 
Pool B: #6 Alice Lloyd College 3, #2 Arlington Baptist University 2
  • Alice Lloyd got off to a strong start in set one, as Rose Scotello recorded a kill to put the Eagles on top 6-2 early. 
  • The Eagles would increase their lead to as large as seven before Arlington Baptist started to find their rhythm with a 5-0 run. 
  • The Patriots response would not last long, as seven different Alice Lloyd players recorded a kill in the first set to go on and win, 25-19. 
  • In set two, Arlington Baptist would take the early edge with a pair of spot kills from Kylee Drury and Avery Allsop. The Patriots led 9-5 before an Alice Lloyd timeout. 
  • The Patriots would dominate the offensive end in set two recording a hitting percentage of .242 to even the match at one with a 25-18 set victory. 
  • Set three was all Arlington and the block. The Patriots scored seven straight and totaled five blocks in the set to win 25-16. Tara Tackett through three sets led Arlington Baptist with six total blocks. 
  • Arlington Baptist scored five of the first six points in set four. Mavis Boop recorded a kill, and Britney Gilchrist added a pair of service aces in the run. 
  • Alice Lloyd would respond with a 6-1 run of their own to go on top 13-10. Gracie Gibson recorded a big kill to cap the run and give the Eagles a three-point lead.
  • The Eagles would maintain the lead the rest of the fourth set, fighting through some long rallies to force the first fifth set of the day with a 25-22 victory. 
  • Set five would result in mayhem. After a 6-2 lead from Arlington Baptist, Alice Lloyd would storm all the way back to force extra points. After each side saw multiple match points, Alice Lloyd would get a kill from Taylan Hoskins to take the set 22-20.
