Greenville, SC – The NCCAA honors the life of Dr. Barry May, Executive Director from 1989-98, who passed away on Monday, February 10, 2025, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Dr. May was not only a tremendous follower of Christ, but also led the NCCAA to enhanced policy making processes, development of new championships, greater interaction with member Presidents, and growth of fundraising efforts, including the launching of the NCCAA Pro-Am in March of 1988.

“Dr. Barry May helped guide the NCCAA into its fourth decade of service to Christian higher education and did so with excellence and purpose,” said NCCAA Executive Director, Dan Wood. “His humility, combined with his wisdom and knowledge of the university structure, led to the NCCAA increasing its presence and voice with relationships with the NCAA and NAIA.”

Also in his career, Dr. May served at three different NCCAA member schools with a career in education and coaching. He taught physical education and coached track & field and cross country at Olivet Nazarene University and Indiana Wesleyan University, and later served as Athletic Director and Dean of Student Development at Indiana Wesleyan. Dr. May continued his career at Asbury University where he chaired the Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Athletics.

Outside of his professional roles, Dr. May was very active and dedicated in his communities. He served on the board at College Wesleyan Church, taught a 5th-grade Sunday school class, and was a devoted member of the Free Methodist Church, where he was on the finance team.

“The entire NCCAA family is thankful to his wife, Fran, and children, Ryan and Christi, for allowing Barry to serve the association so well,” added Wood. “Our prayers and condolences are offered while we are also thankful in knowing that Barry is now healed and with his Savior.”
