Defensive Thrillers Highlight Day One of Softball World Series

Grapevine, TX – Action began at the 2025 NCCAA Softball World Series on Monday, May 19, with six games at the Oak Grove Softball Complex. Top-seeded Jessup University and second-seed Sterling College both went 2-0 to move on in the winners bracket, while University of Fort Lauderdale and Mid-America Christian University both picked up wins as well.
 
Game One: #1 Jessup University 4, #8 Dallas Christian College 1
 
In a defensive struggle, top-seeded Jessup University was able to pull away from Dallas Christian College with a 4-1 victory to open the 2025 NCCAA Softball World Series.
  • After an error by DCC in the bottom of the second inning, a sac fly from Kylie Nunes  brought home Sarah Giles to put Jessup ahead 1-0. Another Crusader error later in the frame saw Aaliyah Pineda score, and moved the Warriors ahead 2-0.
  • Dallas Christian College again found themselves behind the eight-ball, as another error in the bottom of the third inning allowed Rebekah Beasley to score, and Jessup pushed ahead 3-0. 
  • The Crusaders got on the board in the top of the sixth inning, thanks to an RBI single from Laila Robins that brought home Georginia Carrillo, and DCC cut the Jessup advantage down to 3-1.
  • Giles took advantage of the blustery winds in Grapevine this afternoon, drilling a solo shot over the centerfield wall in the bottom of the sixth, and clinched the 4-1 win for Jessup.
  • Giles paced the Warriors, hitting 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a home run. Starting pitcher Bella MacFarlane went all seven innings, allowing just five hits and one run while striking out four.
Game Two: #2 Sterling College 6, #7 Southwestern Christian University 4

A three-run sixth inning pushed Sterling College over Southwestern Christian University, with the Warriors knocking off SCU 6-4 in their first game at the 2025 NCCAA Softball World Series.
  • Lexi Cahwee put SCU on the board first, as her RBI double in the top of the first scored Trinity Norwood, putting the Eagles ahead 1-0.
  • Sterling answered with speed on the basepaths in the bottom of the opening stanza, as Desiree Perales and Aiyana Campos both stole home to put the Warriors on top 2-1. 
  • Kassedy Midgley showed off her speed in the bottom of the second, as she scored off a throwing error to push Sterling ahead 3-1. 
  • Southwestern Christian tied it back up in the third inning, as Payton Leba scored off a ground ball from Holly Elam, before an RBI double from Shakryah Gladness added another, and the Eagles tied the game at three runs apiece. 
  • SCU retook the lead in the top of the sixth inning, as a Norwood single brought home Kaya Horton, putting the Eagles up 4-3.
  • Sterling answered with authority in the bottom of the sixth as Perales tied the game with a solo blast to centerfield. An RBI single from Maria Casillas scored Kelly Hirlas to put the Warriors ahead, and a walk drawn by Bryley Westfahl with the bases loaded brought home Mallory Siedel, and the Warriors pulled out the 6-4 victory.
  • Perales led Sterling offensively, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored and a home run.
Game Three: #4 University of Fort Lauderdale 4, #5 Oakland City University 3

In a defensive battle, fourth-seeded University of Fort Lauderdale knocked off fifth-seeded Oakland City University 4-3 to move into the evening contest on Monday, May 19.
  • Both defenses were locked in early, as big plays from Alexia Geary and Kaylee Pitman for Fort Lauderdale kept the Mighty Oaks off the board. Paige McDaniel started strong for Oakland City, retiring the first 10 batters of the game for the Eagles.
  • Oakland City broke the seal in the top of the fifth, as a Katherine Hibbitt RBI single scored Abi Cross to put the Oaks up 1-0.
  • The Eagles got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning, as a Pitman single scored Kaylee Wilt to tie the game. A single from Kaitlyn Nieves brought home Makenzi Heaton, and NellyNette Fernandez scored on a ground ball to put Fort Lauderdale ahead 3-1.
  • Hallie McCracken tied the contest with one swing of the bat, as a two-run bomb from the freshman made it 3-3 in the top of the sixth. 
  • Fort Lauderdale answered in the bottom of the sixth, as a ball hit by Nieves slid just under the centerfielder’s glove, allowing Cameron Rollison to score and give UFTL the 4-3 advantage.
  • The Mighty Oaks got a pair of runners on in the seventh, but back-to-back strikeouts from Geary ended the game, giving Fort Lauderdale the 4-3 win.
Game Four: #3 Mid-America Christian University 10, #6 Geneva College 0 (Five Innings)

Three-seed Mid-America Christian scored early and often, rolling to a 10-0 win over sixth-seeded Geneva College on Monday, May 19.
  • After loading the bases in the first inning, a ground ball from Madisson Chavez allowed Kisbel Vizcaya to score. An error by Geneva allowed Hallie Wilson to score, and Emylee Campbell scored later in the frame to put the Evangels up 3-0. Serena Rodriguez added another run off a Makenzie Thurman single, and MACU ended the first inning up 4-0. 
  • MACU added on in the second frame, as a Wilson triple scored Vizcaya before Wilson came home to score on a wild pitch. Campbell scored again off an error by the Golden Tornadoes, and the Evangel lead pushed to 7-0. 
  • Wilson and Vizcaya scored again in the fourth frame, thanks to a Chavez double. She came around to score later in the inning off a Thurman single, and MACU went on top 10-0.
  • Geneva got a pair of runners on in the fifth inning, put a fly out to centerfield ended the game, with Mid-America Christian winning the game 10-0 in five innings.
  • Vizacaya, Wilson and Campbell combined for eight runs for the Evangels, while Chavez went 1-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored. Gia Reynosa went 4.1 innings, allowing five hits and striking out four to lead MACU on defense. 
Game Five: #1 Jessup University 4, #4 University of Fort Lauderdale 0
 
Relying on team defense and the long ball, #1 Jessup University knocked off #4 University of Fort Lauderdale 4-0 to pick up their second win of the World Series.
  • Sarah Giles put Jessup on top early, as her RBI single brought home Maddy Ybarra to put the Warriors ahead 1-0 after the opening frame.
  • Olivia Dominguez added another run in the second inning, bringing home Reagann Hoblit on another RBI single to send Jessup ahead 2-0. 
  • The Warrior defense locked down the Fort Lauderdale offense, retiring 13 straight Eagle batters. On the offensive side, Ybarra and Giles hit back-to-back home runs to center field, swelling the Jessup advantage to 4-0 after five innings.
  • Fort Lauderdale got a pair of runners on in the seventh inning, but a pair of strikeouts from Jazlyn Villavicencio ended the contest, preserving the 4-0 shutout win for Jessup.
  • Villavicencio needed just 81 pitches to end the game, striking out three batters and allowing seven hits. Ybarra and Giles both led Jessup with two hits, with Giles adding two RBI and a run scored with her home run, while Ybarra had a double, a home run, one RBI, and two runs scored.
Game Six: #2 Sterling College 3, #3 Mid-America Christian University 2
 
In a rematch of the NCCAA Central Regional Championship six days ago, #2 Sterling College pulled off a come-from-behind walk-off victory over #3 Mid-America Christian University, knocking off the Evangels 3-2.
  • MACU took an early lead in the top of the first inning, as a Hallie Wilson single brought home Kisbel Vizcaya to put the Evangels ahead 1-0. An error by Sterling scored Wilson, and Mid-America Christian took a 2-0 lead after the first stanza. 
  • Neither team could get an advantage for the next few innings, as Mid-America Christian saw eight of their next nine batters retired. In the fifth and sixth innings, Sterling saw their chances erased thanks to back-to-back inning-ending double plays from the MACU infield. 
  • In the bottom of the seventh inning, with the bases loaded, a single from Bryley Westfahl scored Mallory Seidel to get Sterling on the board. On a ball hit in the infield by Mariah Cunningham, a throw home from MACU went wide to score Phoebi Waller. A second throw home also went wide, allowing Mya’ Dunn to score the game-winning run on a walk-off error.
  • Desiree Perales led Sterling on offense, going 3-for-3 with a double. 
The double-elimination World Series continues Tuesday, May 20 at 1 p.m. CT with a pair of elimination games on Field three and four at the Oak Grove Softball Complex.
