Taylor Gilpin Named 2019 DII Men's Basketball Pete Maravich Award Recipient 3/5/2019 7:04:38 PM Greenville, SC: The NCCAA is pleased to recognize Taylor Gilpin of Johnson University Tennessee (JUTN) as the 2019 Pete Maravich Memorial Award recipient for Division II Men’s Basketball. Two year captain, Taylor Gilpin has led the Royals with an average of 17.35 points and 4.01 rebounds per game. He was awarded 1st Team All-Regional and 1st Team All-American honors in 2018. Gilpin is the all-time leading scorer at JUTN with over 2,300 career points. In 2018, he helped lead the Royals to a 4th place finish at the NCCAA National Tournament. Outside of basketball, the senior guard from Bloomington, Indiana has become a leader on campus and in the community. On campus, he has served as a Resident Assistant (RA) for 3 years and has had an active participation in chapel services. In the community, Gilpin serves with Operation Backyard, Habitat for Humanity, and has helped JUTN in building a relationship with local elementary schools. Majoring in Business Administration and holding a 3.56 GPA, Gilpin is a 2-time NCCAA Scholar-Athlete (2018 & 2019). “Taylor is a tremendous example of faith lived out in everyday life,” says Johnson Head Men’s Basketball Coach, Brandon Perry. “He has set a culture of high character and academics for our team while maintaining a high level of basketball skill.” Pete Maravich Award Finalists Jayson Barnhart, Bob Jones University Grant Garrison, Grace Christian University Award Description The purpose of this award is to recognize the outstanding NCCAA student-athlete in Men’s Basketball and highlights excellence in competition, skill, academics, and Christian service during his career. “Pistol Pete” Maravich was known for his ball handling, shooting abilities, and creative passing. He was an NBA All-Star, named one of NBA’s 50 greatest players, and inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1987. He came to know Christ later in his life and spent the last years of his life pointing people to Christ.
