Stage is Set for Final Day of Pool Play in the NCCAA Division I Women’s Soccer National Championship

Kissimmee, FL – Day two of the NCCAA Division I Women’s Soccer National Championship saw a pair of victories to start the day and a pair of ties to end it. Action was highlighted by a goal in the final minute from Southwestern Christian University standout Abbi Johnson to secure three points. The field of teams will have the day off tomorrow and will pick up play on Thursday with the final day of pool play starting at noon ET. 
 
Pool A: #1 Bethel University 5, #5 University of Northwestern 0
  • The Bethel offense picked up right where they left off on day two of the NCCAA Division I Women’s Soccer National Championship, scoring in the 18th minute on a line drive shot from Aubrey Vervynckt. 
  • Less than a minute later, Grace Beck was able to poke one off the cross bar and down for the Pilots second goal of the game to quickly take command at 2-0. 
  • After the goals, Bethel started to play much more defensively and slow the pace. They held Northwestern to just three first half shots as the maintained the 2-0 lead at the break. 
  • After the break Bethel immediately added two more goals. Leena Thomas would find the net twice in the 46th and 48thminute to immediately balloon the lead to 4-0. 
  • Bethel continued to dominate adding a fifth goal in the 56th minute on a shot from Aubrey Vervynckt. Vervynckt recorded her second goal of the day to make it 5-0. The Pilots would just hold at five the remainder of the game to earn their second win of pool play. 
Pool B: #2 Southwestern Christian University 1, #6 Redeemer University 0
  • Southwestern Christian and Redeemer showed strong defense from the jump as the first shot was not recorded until the ninth minute. 
  • Redeemer would see back-to-back shots in the 23rd minute but would be outshot 7-3 in the first half. Neither side could find the net, as it stayed 0-0. 
  • Southwestern Christian continued to push in the second half outshooting Redeemer, but the Royal defense stayed strong until the final minute. 
  • In the final minute Abbi Johnson recorded a heroic goal at the 89:22 mark with her left foot. Johnson beat a defender and went bar down to score and give the Eagles a 1-0 victory. 
Pool A: #4 Asbury University 2, #8 Warner University 2
  • Goals were coming early and often as Warner was able to find the net in the sixth minute on a goal from Shelby Cape. Cape was able to beat her defender to find the net and make it 1-0. 
  • In the 20th minute Asbury would get a free kick from just outside the box. Maggie Perry would go for net and succeed with a beautiful equalizer over the head of Royal keeper Hailey Van Houweling. 
  • In the 26th minute Asbury would net a goal that would give them the lead, as the Eagles would create a Warner turnover and find Anna Sparks to make it 2-1. 
  • Asbury would hold the 2-1 lead the remainder of the first half. 
  • In the second half, Asbury looked like they would get a third on a breakaway with the keeper, but it would be called back for offsides as it stayed 2-1. 
  • After the near third, Warner would dominate on the offensive end, recording double-digit shots in the second half. Jessica Alejandre would find an equalizer with a beautiful upper-90 shot that gave the Royals their second goal of the day. 
  • Warner continued to press late in the second half but were unable to complete the comeback, earning a point with a 2-2 tie with Asbury. 
Pool B: #3 Houghton University 0, #7 Wayland Baptist University 0
  • Houghton and Wayland Baptist traded chances early as the Highlanders saw two early shots which were followed by nine straight shots from the Pioneers. Neither side could find the net, as the score stayed 0-0 at the half. 
  • Houghton responded with a much more complete second half more than doubling their first half shot total. 
  • Highlanders’ keeper Preslee Miller would make an outstanding save in the final minutes to keep the game scoreless. The defenses held on both sides as the two keepers combined for six saves in a 0-0 tie.
