#KINGCHASING STUDY PROGRAM: UNIT NINE - RESPONSIBILITY

3/2/2026 12:00:00 AM

A coach carries many responsibilities, and coaching cannot be only about performance - it must include caring for the whole person: loving athletes, supporting their mental and emotional well-being, and praying for their lives beyond sport. When coaches embrace this calling, their responsibilities become stewardship, and their influence becomes a way God cares for and shapes the people entrusted to them.

Unit Nine – Responsibility

Lesson One – How Christian Coaches Can Prioritize Athletes' Mental Health
The article explains that athletes face hundreds of hidden stressors, so Christian coaches must proactively care for mental health rather than reacting only when crises appear. Using simple tools like regular "Total Athlete Check-Ins," coaches can understand athletes holistically (physical, social, mental, spiritual), adjust coaching, and connect players to appropriate help. The coach's role is not therapist or bystander, but a trusted bridge who builds a feedback-rich, caring environment that reflects Christ-like care for the whole person.

Lesson Two – The Greatest Commandment in Sport: Why Love is More Than a Team Superpower
The article explains that in sport, love is not just chemistry or. a competitive edge but the central command of Jesus - loving God fully and loving others sacrificially. It calls coaches and athletes to express love through action: caring for teammates, valuing opponents as image-bearers, and grounding identity in God rather than performance. When practiced this way, sport becomes a space where relationships reflect God's character and His kingdom becomes visible.

Lesson Three – Bible Verses Coaches Can Pray Over Their Players
The article encourages coaches to intentionally pray Scripture over their athletes as a way to care for them beyond performance. It highlights six prayer themes - salvation, spiritual protection, insight into players' hearts, trust in God through adversity, God-centered motivation, and wise decision-making - showing that a coach's responsibility includes spiritual stewardship. Prayer becomes a meaningful way to love and lead athletes toward lasting good.
