5/16/2024 7:31:00 PM

Kansas City, MO - Top seeded Concordia University Ann Arbor (CUAA) made it two straight NCCAA Softball National Championships and four in program history (1998, 1999, 2023, 2024) after a 3-1 victory over No. 2 Southwestern Christian University on Thursday afternoon in the if needed championship game. Pitching was the name of the game for the Cardinals all World Series long, allowing just seven runs in six games to go 5-1 overall. In the championship series, Concordia would fall 2-1 by walk-off in the first game after a seventh inning error. The Cardinals responded in game two however behind Emilee Underwood's strong pitching performance and a key solo home run from Maddy Grueter to secure the 2024 NCCAA National Championship.

Concordia Ann Arbor began play on Tuesday with quick work over No. 8 Kansas Christian College to stay in the winners bracket, earning a 3-1 victory. Freshman Emilee Underwood got the start in the circle for CUAA and recorded 15 strikeouts in a complete game. Cassidy Kane was the hero offensively with two hits and two RBI. In their second game of the day, Concordia would once again earn a 3-1 victory, this time over the No. 5 seed Geneva College. Paige Anderson took her turn in the circle and would go the full 7.0 innings allowing no earned runs while striking out six batters of her own. Second baseman Sarah Tyrrell had the crucial pair of hits and RBI in this one to move CUAA to 2-0 in the tournament.

On day two, the Cardinals would play a championship preview against the Southwestern Christian. In a game that saw five combined errors, Concordia would explode for five runs in the fourth inning to cruise to an 8-1 victory. Underwood once again would pitch in this one and she did not allow an earned run and struckout eight batters. Designated player Maddy Grueter hit a three-run home run in that big fourth inning to power the CUAA offense in the game.

Championship Saturday began with a rematch for Concordia Ann Arbor against Geneva College in the semifinal. Needing a win to advance to the championship series, the Cardinals would get just that with a 5-1 victory behind more outstanding pitching. The Golden Tornadoes made some outstanding defensive plays, but were unable to keep up with the Cardinals offensively beyond the fifth inning. With the game tied at one, Concordia scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth behind three RBI from Faith Cramton. Cassidy Kane would pitch the first 4.2 innings of the game, with the dominant Emily Underwood securing her third victory of the tournament pitching the final 2.1 innings.

Concordia Ann Arbor's Emilee Underwood was named the Tournament Most Outstanding Player. The remaining All-Tournament Team members and other award winners are listed here.
