Kissimmee, FL – Day two of the NCCAA DII Men’s Soccer National Championship saw #1 Toccoa Falls College pick up their second win of Pool Play, #6 Grace Christian University upset #2 Alice Lloyd College 5-2, and #3 Pensacola Christian College and #4 Boyce College earn draws against #7 Faith Baptist Bible College and #8 Southwestern Adventist University.
Pool A - #1 Toccoa Falls College 2, #5 Central Christian College of the Bible 0
Despite being outshot for most of the contest, #1 Toccoa Falls College shut out #5 Central Christian College of the Bible 2-0 to pick up their second win of Pool Play.
- Just five minutes into the match, Edwin Gonzales had a chance to put Toccoa Falls on top, but a diving stop by Lucas Carmo knocked the ball out of play to keep the match scoreless.
- In the 27th minute, Patricio Bennevendo found Hector Tenorio in the box, and Tenorio got just enough space to lace a shot past the CCCB defense and put the Screaming Eagles ahead 1-0.
- Zach Madrigal looked to add to the Toccoa Falls tally in the 30th minute, but a nice save at the last second by Jake Gracey kept the score 1-0 at the half.
- Richard Freitas looked to open the second half with a tying strike for Central Christian College of the Bible, but a big save from Brandon Huerta kept the Saints off the scoreboard in the 46th minute.
- Zackary Hathaway had a pair of breakaway chances for the Saints in the 66th minute, but his shots went just wide, and again CCCB could not quite capitalize.
- In the 75th minute, Zach Madrigal had a chance to add to the Toccoa Falls advantage, but his shot went just high and the Screaming Eagles lead stayed at 1-0.
- With under four minutes remaining, Carmo had a chance to add a goal for the Saints, but a fingertip save from Huerta kept Toccoa Falls in front.
- Bennevendo iced the contest for the Eagles, as his strike with less than two minutes remaining pushed Toccoa Falls to the 2-0 victory.
Pool B - #6 Grace Christian University 5, #2 Alice Lloyd College 2
In the first upset of the week,#6 Grace Christian University scored early and often, rolling over #2 Alice Lloyd College 5-2 to earn their first win of the week in Pool B.
- Caden Petroelje opened the scoring for Grace Christian early, as he stole an errant Alice Lloyd pass and then rifled in a goal from almost midfield for the Tigers in the ninth minute to put GCU on top 1-0.
- Grace Christian added another goal in the 19th minute, as Elijah Berghoef and Nate Newberry moved the ball with precision to CJ Kazmerski, and the Tigers pulled ahead 2-0.
- Alice Lloyd wasted little time to cut the lead in half, as just 18 seconds later, Maddux Camden and Alex De Wolfe found Luis Sarabia to put the Eagles on the board and make it a 2-1 ball game.
- Grace Christian was able to score an additional goal to end the first half, as Isaac VanderMolen found Gavin McTavish in the 40th minute to push GCU ahead 3-1 at the break.
- The Tigers came out of the halftime break roaring, as VanderMolen scored a goal of his own off an assist by Paul Ureel just 3:36 into the second half, swelling the Grace Christian advantage to 4-1.
- Alice Lloyd found their scoring again in the 58th minute, as Luis Sarabia found Dylan Moore to cut the lead back in half, and the Eagles trailed 4-2.
- With under six minutes left in the contest, Kazmerski once again controlled the ball for Grace Christian, as he and Berghoef teamed up to find Austin Engel for the dagger, as the Tigers stunned Alice Lloyd 5-2.
Pool A - #4 Boyce College 3, #8 Southwestern Adventist University 3
In a high-scoring, physical matchup, #4 Boyce College and #8 Southwestern Adventist University finished with a 3-3 draw to close out day two of Pool A play.
- Kayden Kalenga almost electrified the Boyce offense in the 8th minute with a header off a deep pass from midfield, but Christian Torres was able to record the save and keep the game scoreless.
- In the 12th minute, it was Sean Coulter’s turn to step up at the keeper position for Boyce, stopping a laser from Lennin Malvaiz to keep Southwestern Adventist off the board.
- Southwestern Adventist found the back of the net after a foul set up a free kick for the Knights just outside the box, and Israel Pina sent a shot into the back of the net in the 25th minute to give SWAU the 1-0 advantage at the half.
- In the 50th minute, Boyce earned a corner kick chance, and Lian Tuang fired a cross into the box that Johnny Mufishi connected with, sending a header past the SWAU defense and tying the game 1-1.
- Southwestern Adventist answered in the 66th minute, as the ball ricocheted around the box before Eric Coria connected with a strike to put the Knights ahead 2-1.
- Just over 30 seconds later, a foul in the box sent Boyce to the penalty spot, and Jude Hammen nailed the chance, tying the game back up at 2-2.
- Coria almost picked up his second goal of the match in the 73rd minute, but his shot bounced off the top of the crossbar and out of play, and the match stayed tied 2-2.
- With less than three minutes to go in the match, Pina found the net for a second time to put SWAU ahead 3-2.
- In the final seconds of the match, a foul outside the box gave Boyce a chance, and Joel Isaac connected with Ben Sowers, and the Bulldogs salvaged a 3-3 draw.
Pool B - #3 Pensacola Christian College 1, #7 Faith Baptist Bible College 1
Despite being outshot 25-7, #7 Faith Baptist Bible College used an early second half goal to earn their second straight draw of the NCCAA DII Men’s Soccer National Championship, tying #3 Pensacola Christian College 1-1.
- Pensacola Christian College came out firing, sending off six shots in succession to open the contest, but only one was on goal and was saved by Zeke Denger of FBBC to keep the match scoreless 25 minutes in.
- In the 28th minute, Faith Baptist Bible got their first shot of the match, but the chance by Austin Lundberg was corralled by Bryce Hammond and the game remained scoreless.
- With 50 seconds remaining in the first frame, Pensacola Christian earned a penalty kick, and for the second night in a row, Samir Vieira Siqueria connected to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead at the half.
- The lead did not last long for Pensacola Christian, as just 36 seconds into the second half, Cody Clark needed just one touch and found the back of the net for Faith Baptist Bible College to tie the contest at one goal apiece.
- Pensacola Christian continued to get chance after chance in the second half, but each shot just missed the mark, and the teams remained tied heading into the final 15 minutes of play.
- PCC again continued to strike at Faith Baptist Bible, but each shot went wide. Pensacola Christian’s last chance came from Vieira Siqueria in the 88th minute and went high, and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
