Because a coach's sense of worth so easily rises and falls with the record, each lesson calls us to renew our minds, remember what God says is true of us, and lead from security instead of fear. When identity is secure, the pursuit of excellence becomes gratitute in motion, an offering of worship rather than a defense of our worth.

Lesson One – The Excellent Coach: Coaching From Identity Instead of For It
Coaches wrestle with the same performance-based identity problem as their athletes, where a sense of worth rises and falls with the record. This article calls coaches to renew their minds through Romans 12 and anchor their identity in Christ, coaching from identity instead of for it. When our worth isn't riding on the outcome, we're free to hold higher standards, lead from love instead of fear, and stay the same coach in a loss as in a win. That's the mark of an excellent coach.

Lesson Two – Becoming Who You Already Are
Every coach has watched an athlete play scared, and buried underneath that fear is almost always a question of identity: who am I if I don't perform? In "Become Who You Already Are" from Desiring God, Gary Millar argues that knowing who we already are in Christ has to come before what we do, a reordering that reframes the whole pursuit of excellence. Read it with your athletes in mind, then ask your team the question at its heart: are we playing to become someone or playing because of who we already are?
